Learning and Technology

I remember playing school underneath the basement stairs with my sister. With a small blackboard, I instructed her on all the wordly wisdom I possessed at age 4. I can't remember a time when I didn't want to be a teacher. How to become masterful doesn't happen just because I earned the credits for a BEd. I have taught French Immersion, ESL, Social Studies, Seminary, English Grammar and many lessons for different groups in my church. I have taught toddlers and tweens and seniors and pretty much everyone in between. Even my dog has benefitted from my pedagogy.

I'm taking a technology course introducing me to the latest technology including wikis and podcasts, tweets, blogs. I make no pretense that knowing how to use the technology will make me a better teacher. But it certainly trumps the blackboard! And besides perhaps that's the best teacher skill of all: that I am first and foremost a learner.

Earlier this summer, I watched the documentary Waiting for Superman which left me with this renewed desire not only to improve my skills as a teacher but also to find a situation where I might practise them more regularly.

This is such a good idea. I found that teaching was always about staying five minutes ahead of your students. Technologically speaking, that's getting more difficult.

Good on you, Bonnie! What an inspiration you are! I am 'teaching' on Nov 9 at the Stake Ctr - so feel free to come and support and add, add, add. I am grateful to be able to call you a friend!
