Obscene Pay

Today I was reading how Iginla (captain of the Calgary Flames) earns $7 million a year. Had his team gone to playoffs, he would have received a bonus. But they didn't! In the corporate world, JI might have had his shares cut for not delivering. In a sweat shop, he would have been sacked. I appreciate the sacrifices an athlete makes, the wear and tear on the body, travelling on the road the majority of the time, the short "earning" power span; however, it offends some proliteriate sensibility I have from growing up in an NDP home to contemplate their pay cheque.

Movie stars' compensation also staggers my mind. Cameron Diaz received $10 million for her voice over in Shrek.
Cameron Diaz!

Heck, I'd do that for $100,000. Let's be honest, knowing me, I would probably settle for a modest hourly rate. Sarah Jessica Parker received $8 million for the recent dud movie with Hugh Grant Did You Hear About the Morgans?. Please enlighten me on how that salary equates to entertainment received. Yup I know I am whining but really $100,000????

Their fish bowl lifestle with constant public scrutiny can't be fun. Admittingly wearing stilletos (AKA torture chambers)and sequined gowns (how many layers of SPANX DO YOU THINK ARE UNDERNEATH)and having paparazzi stalking you can't be fun. The constant pressure to look good, wear the right things and be in the right places can't be fun. So is it guilt that makes Angeline Jolie adopt all those kids to give them a great life? To justify her $9 million a movie?

What about CEOs - did you know William Doyle, CEO of Saskatoon-based Potash Corp is the highest paid in Canada with in excess of $320 million! Yes he has pressure to increase profit share, find new markets, etc. But seriously how important in the big scheme is that? Does the compensation equate to job done? When is enough enough?

What about fireman and doctors and teachers and lawyers and day care workers? What about their value? What do you think about
OBSCENE PAY

And I agree with your rant. What bothers me the most, is that there are some guys that were young professionals in Drayton Valley with us that have done very well with their companies. I am only hoping that they are keeping their philanthropy quiet, but unfortunately I think their lives are only for the acquisition of more and more toys, houses, trip, etc; I think most of them have forgotten what their roots are -modest families with hard working Dads who probably volunteered for the Rotary, Kinsmen, and so on.

On that note -have a great day,

Linda

And on the flip side we pay our politicians such tiny sums of money - and then wonder why we don't get the cream of the crop.
