Just back from four days in New York City where I met the other Pipeline Fellowship Fellows and attended the PF Conference. Among other things, we were introduced to the difference between philanthropy and angel investing. Panelists discussed social impact, due diligence and social entrepreneurs. Imagine a room full of bright, well educated, ambitious women gaining a specialized education "to diversify the investor pool". Saturday ten of us went through 86 applications from women who need "seed money". Eventually it will be down to ten and we will interview the founders of those companies to choose one. We laughed as if we were all old friends and now for the next six months we will work together to launch someone's company. This experience promises to be energizing and appealing on so many different levels.
It's been particularly satisfying to discover what I bring to the table. Not math. Not financial experience. Not years of work experience. I may be the one who boils water when they go through the price/earning calculations. And yet despite my numeric weakness, I didn't feel out of place or deficient.
I walked just about everywhere we needed to go. I practised yoga at Yogamaya and Yoga For the People and shopped at Joe Fresh on 5th Avenue. New York has great restaurants, wonderful flower markets almost everywhere we went. It's a long way from Kansas.
While in the USA, I was able to access Downton Abbey in Netflix. Though I only watched one episode, I'm hooked.
Real estate is ridiculously expensive; but flowers, pedicures, eyebrow threading, cab fare seem like bargains.
Back again next month and hope to take in the MET, The Book of Mormon play while mainly advancing the PF agenda.

I'm hoping to return to NYC in June. Your trip sounded fabulous and your work is important. It's all good.
Downton Abbey is completely addicting. In season two, the plot becomes a soap opera, but a well-done soap opera.
You can't miss the MET. It's one of my favorite places on earth. And I'm glad you're hooked on Downton Abbey. The second season gets a little soap operatic, but it's done so well, who cares?
HI Bonnie -
You are an inspiration to me - and I am ever impressed with your with and love of others. I would like to go to the B of M play with you, because we could laugh together about the stuff they got/get wrong, and ponder on the stuff they got/get right! Thanks for your good example. K
