Used to Be Mother always wore a nightie. With nothing underneath. It was very traumatic for one of us girls when we'd have to sleep with our mother. Nothing inappropriate happened but it was always awkward to awaken and discover parts of our mother that we'd rather not. She has nighties from the 80s. They are tattered yet beloved. Last fall her complex was having a meteor shower viewing and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to introduce pyjamas to mom's attire. Though she found them warm and comfortable that night, she kept wearing her nighties. At Christmas, a granddaughter bought her a pair made of flannel when she complained about being cold.
The other night she came out of her bedroom sporting these. She liked that she didn't need a robe. She liked how they kept her warm. We liked that they kept her parts hidden. After breakfast this morning when she would normally get bathed and dressed, we noted how she worked away at her jigsaw in her pj's. It wasn't until late this afternoon that she finally put on her bathing suit and came to the pool. As we were getting ready to go out to dinner we noticed that she was back in her pj's.
Mom you need to go get ready for dinner.
Can't I wear my pj's?
No, it's a public place.
Why not? I'm covered and decent. I like them.
Reluctantly she changed. We went for dinner. Fifteen minutes after we arrived home she was back in her pyjamas.
