Used to Be Mother never liked rock music when I was a teenager. She'd tell us to turn it down but more often turn it off. Until today.
She came over to visit and to work on the puzzle I have set up for her. I had an 80s rock station playing. David Bowie's Changes was playing. She started dancing. She keeps her fisted hands by her hips and sways back and forth. She has a grin on her face that is a mixture of pleasure and self-consciousness.
UTBM: That's a great orchestra. Who is that?
Me: David Bowie
UTBM: "Never heard of him before but this is good music."
She goes back to her puzzle.
UTBM: I sure am having fun here today. This puzzle is a great picture. Are you going to glue it together and put it on your wall? This music is sure great.
Later, as we leave she notices that my cookie jars are full.
UTBM: "Oh you have cookies."
Me: "No they are candies. Do you want some?"
UTBM: "I'd rather have a cookie, but sure."
We drop her off on the way to a friend's wedding. She tells us again how much she enjoyed her day with us.
I wait for it....
UTBM: "Can't I live with you?"
As we drove away, I said to Bob "If I follow Mom's lead, perhaps I WILL like punk music."

Mmmmmm . . . the David Bowie orchestra. Do you ever do the same puzzle over again?
I like the way you give your mother puzzles. I think having Alzheimers' must be really boring.
